Phonentesia – Introduction

Phonentesia – the innate human understanding of tension in sound.

This is an introduction to a series of articles that explores why and how sound can have a quality that a listener experiences as tense.

Phonentesia is an idea that I first articulated during my studies in Digital Audio Production, at Blekinge Institute of Technology, between the years 2011 and 2014. This is a republication of that study which lead me to construct the idea of phonentesia. The original study consists of a series of articles written in Swedish, translated here with some editorial additions from today.

The building blocks in this series are rudimentary which makes it accessible for both beginners and advanced audio artists.
